OTB Research Institute for the Built Environment specializes in independent research and consultancy in the field of housing, construction and the built environment. The institute is part of Delft University of Technology.

Policy areas
The policy areas of OTB Research Institute are centred around various aspects of the built environment. For example, research is carried out into such areas as housing, urban renewal, transport and infrastructure, urban and regional development, sustainable building and building policy, land policy, geo-information resources and GIS technology.
The institute’s research draws on the knowledge and skills of various disciplines: public administration, architectural engineering, social geography, planning, economics, sociology, computer science and civil engineering.
Scientific research & social relevance
OTB Research Institute for the Built Environment distinguishes itself by virtue of its combination of pure and applied research. Scientific knowledge is translated into solutions to social and policy issues. Conversely, practical studies enable new scientific questions to be formulated and addressed. In addition to this, the institute – as part of Delft University of Technology – devotes much of its energies to knowledge transfer in the form of publications, courses, seminars, schooling and training.

Our main clients are government departments, housing corporations, project developers, consumer organizations, branch organizations, financiers and investors, property managers and construction companies, GIS developers and suppliers.
Our position within Delft University of Technology
OTB Research Institute for the Built Environment is an interfaculty research institute within Delft University of Technology. With regard to education and research, we maintain close relations with the following three faculties:
Faculty of Architecture
Faculty of Technology, Policy and Management
Faculty of Civil Engineering and Geosciences
These are the institute’s three constituent faculties. The deans of these three faculties form the Executive Board of OTB.
