Dominic Stead is OTB’s contact person for international research.
Dominic Stead holds a Masters degree (MSc) in Environmental Science from Imperial College, London (awarded in 1988), a Masters degree (MA) in Town and Country Planning from the University of the West of England, Bristol (awarded in 1995) and a doctorate (PhD) from University College London (awarded in 1999).
Dominic's career started as a researcher in the School of Town and Country Planning at Bristol Polytechnic (now the University of the West of England, Bristol) in 1990. In 1996 he was appointed as a research fellow at the Bartlett School of Planning, University College London. He moved to OTB Research Institute for Housing, Urban and Mobility Studies at Delft University of Technology in 2001 after being awarded a prestigious Marie Curie Postdoctoral Research Fellowship.
His research focuses on the governance of spatial planning and transport policy. Dominic has a substantial amount of experience of pan-European comparative research on spatial policy, including various international research projects funded by ESPON, INTERREG and EU Framework Programmes.
Recent ESPON projects that Dominic has been involved in include project 1.1.2 (urban-rural relationships in Europe), project 2.3.1 (application of the ESDP), project 2.3.2 (governance of territorial and urban policies) and project 3.3 (territorial dimension of the Lisbon and Gothenburg Strategies). He has also been involved in two smaller ESPON-INTERACT projects: one on transportation and communication networks and the other on polycentricity and rural-urban relations.
Recent research related to the INTERREG programme include the update of the mid-term evaluation of the INTERREG IIIB programme for North West Europe and the synthesis of key issues, lessons and conclusions from the INTERREG IIIB URBAL project.
He is currently involved in two research projects funded under the EU Framework Programme. The SUME project (Sustainable Urban Metabolism for Europe) is concerned with the use of resources in urban development and the role of urban policies in making the use of these resources more efficient. The SUPER-CITIES project (Sustainable Land Use Policies for Resilient Cities) explores the robustness, transferability and sustainability of recent land-use policy instruments for managing urban change.
Dominic has also acted as special advisor to the UNECE/WHO-Europe Transport, Health and Environment Pan-European Programme and expert reviewer for the EU’s CIVITAS Programme supporting sustainable, energy efficient urban transport.
He has published widely in books and international journals including Built Environment, Cities, Environment and Planning B, Innovation – the European Journal of Social Science Research, International Social Science Journal, Local Environment, Planning Practice and Research, Planning Theory and Practice, Town Planning Review, Transport Policy, Transport Reviews and Transportation Planning and Technology. He has co-edited three books: ‘European Transport Policy and Sustainable Development’ (2000, Spon), ‘Policy integration in practice’ (2004, Delft University Press) and ‘Transition towards Sustainable Mobility’ (2012, Ashgate). He is a member of the editorial boards of Planning Practice and Research and the European Journal of Transport and Infrastructure Research.
Dominic Stead has successfully supervised undergraduate and postgraduate (masters and PhD) students in the areas of governance, sustainable development and the comparative analysis of planning policies and processes. He is open to enquiries from new PhD students in these fields, particularly those with a focus on one or more of the following dimensions: Europeanisation, policy transfer and learning, planning cultures, path dependence, urban resilience and urban metabolism.
